Non-Dilutive Funding, Policy and Advocacy Are All Key to Growing Your Business

Our grIP Senior Advisor, Liz Powell shares some insights on helping startups accelerate growth with non-dilutive government funding and advocacy. Founded by Liz in 2007, G2G Consulting finds non-dilutive funding, builds relationships, and influences policies and regulations for changemakers from across the country on the federal, state and local levels of government. She has raised over $528 million in non-dilutive funding. Her team crafts and shapes policies and regulations, influences funding levels both among agencies and with Congress, and develops relationships with key decision-makers for clients. G2G also tracks grants on a daily basis with their Monthly GBG Report (government bioscience grants report).

How did G2G started

Liz spent a few years working on Capitol Hill. She then moved to Cleveland, Ohio and met many entrepreneurs in high-tech and health innovation as well as some non-profit doing great work but not knowing how to navigate government to accelerate their growth, funding and make a bigger impact. At that point she realized she had a great opportunity to bring all the parts together and created G2G. Today, Liz lives in Washington, DC and has a team still working in Cleveland and Columbus, Ohio.

How is G2G helping entrepreneurs and innovators?

G2G’s core service is government affairs with a focus on health and high-tech innovation as well as non-profits with all clients being changemakers. The team starts by meeting with you, listening to your concerns and goals, discussing your enterprise and deciphering what you need to make it grow and achieve results. Then the team crafts a comprehensive Strategic Roadmap. It includes the targets to pursue in government, what to expect from each one, the scope of work involved and what they aim to accomplish. Then they execute it with clear communications throughout the process.

Where do you see the biggest opportunities in accessing non-dilutive funding- what are the top 3 categories?

  1. Health innovation and life sciences

  2. AI and machine learning (technology-based innovations)

  3. Transportation, aviation and aerospace

How can you get started?

Every month G2G produces the Government Bioscience Grants report (GBG Report) and then we host a free call open to anyone (every third Thursday of the month) at 12pm ET. They provide you with highlights of the key funding opportunities that are available from government agencies in the life sciences. Also, in partnership with grIP, G2G hosts a quarterly series called “What's Happening in Washington, DC” with fellow grIP leaders, Chris Campbell and Chris Oates. This is one of the most popular online events with many dialing in from all sectors, as they discuss the economy, politics and government updates.

What are some projects G2G is working on?

Women’s Health – G2G is leading the charge for more women’s health innovation and research funding with a letter to Congress co-signed by nearly 1,000 companies, VCs, institutions, providers, patients and more. I

Innovation Tax – G2G is leading the effort to repeal the Section 174 Innovation Tax. The House passed a bill in January 2024 to do so but the Senate is stalled. It is critical to advocate for its elimination by talking to your senators because it forces companies to pay taxes on up to 90% of the cost of research and equipment (R&E), which is unprecedented. Companies are being forced to file for bankruptcy, fire employees and reject government grants to avoid this tax.
